Race Day - Arrive Early
If you have not already done so - Pick-up Race Packet.
Body Markings and Study Course.
Photo ID will be required to pick up packet.
Important things to remember during packet pickup:
1) Athletes may only pick up their own packets. Under no circumstances may an athlete pick up a packet for another person.
2) If an athlete does not bring a photo ID to packet pickup they have one (1) option:
a) Go home to get it
3) USAT membership is not a factor in registration for the 2013 Lake Waconia Triathlon

PURPOSE - To provide a safe, fun, well-organized sporting event for the public. This event will be geared to the recreational athlete to encourage and recognize healthy lifestyles. This event will provide a positive influence to the community and recognition of our sponsors.
ROUTE - The Lake Waconia Triathlon is a three-stage event consisting of swimming ½ mile, biking 20 miles, and running 4 miles
RACE DIRECTION - The Lake Waconia Triathlon is a located just east of Waconia at the intersection of Hwy 5 and Paradise Lane. The Race will start and finish near the public beach located in the south east corner of beautiful Lake Waconia.
STARTING LINE INFORMATION - Race will begin at 8:30 am. Elites athletes and Teams will start in a wave format, all other athletes will start in a “Time-Trial” format, every 3 seconds.
“Time-trial” start will be organized by age groups. Individuals in respective age groups will start every 3 seconds; Starting on the beach, crossing the chip timing mat and running into the water to begin the swim.
Wets suits are allowed per USAT Rules
The swim course will be marked with buoys.
All volunteers will be wearing brightly colored shirts. Please feel free to ask for assistance if you have any questions or concerns.
SWIM ROUTE - The race starts on the west side of the Lake Waconia swimming beach. Swim along a course following the markers in a U shaped course starting away from shore, turning east for the approximate width of the swimming beach and return to the east side of the swimming beach.
SWIM START - Elites athletes and Teams will start in a wave format, all other athletes will start in a “Time-Trial” format, every 3 seconds

SAFETY - If you become overly tired while swimming or need to stop swimming for any reason, please let the volunteers in the boats know what assistance you need. You may rest, but do not advance yourself, per USAT rules.
EXCHANGE - Swimmers will exit the water and run approximately 200 yards into the bike corral / exchange area.
BIKING - Bikers will exit the park and proceed west on Old Beach road traveling to Main street. Turning right on main and proceeding up to the top of “cemetery hill” and then through the City of Waconia via Main Street to Walnut. Bikers will turn left (south) on Walnut and go to Third Street. At Third Street they will turn right (west) go to Brandt Blvd. Staying on Burandt Blvd, Bikers will turn left (south) on Kinder Dr. Bikers will turn right on Oak Ave. They will turn right (west) on County Road 10 (Waconia Parkway). Bikers will follow Co Rd 10 north to County Road 30 turning left (west) and head to Mayer, turn right (north) on Shimmcor to go through industrial park. Bikers will turn right (north) on Highway 25, Biking north through the beautiful town of Mayer to Hwy 7. Turning right (east) on Highway 7 at the Roundabout. Biking east through the next Roundabout to County Rd 155. Turning right (south) on County Rd 155, head south to County Road 92. Turn right on County Road 92 to Highway 5. Turn right (west) on Highway 5 to Paradise Lane. Turn right (north) into park return to the east side of Waconia County Park via Paradise Lane. TURN RT (east), THEN LEFT (north) into the parking area and continue straight to the Bike Corral entrance returning to the east side of the beach. Dismounting and running into the bike corral in the same chute as the swim entrance.
PLACEMENT OF BIKE NUMBER - Our ability to read your race number is of vital importance to get accurate results. Please be sure to place the race number on your bike frame as shown. You may also be asked to call out your number as you pass the transition spots. Thanks for your assistance in advance. We appreciate your participation in this race.

HELMET - Please note, all participants are required to wear an ANSI/SNELL approved cycling helmet.
RULES -
Slots in the bike corral are allotted on a first-come, first-serve basis. No exceptions!
Only participants with a race number and volunteers will be allowed in the bike corral, to ensure bike security.
Each participant is responsible to remove his or her bike after the race in a reasonable amount of time.
SAFETY -
You will not be allowed to ride your bike in the transition area. You must dismount and push your bike before entering the bike corral. Violators will be assessed a 2 minute penalty or be disqualified, depending on severity of violation. This is for your safety.
Drafting will not be allowed. The drafting rule will not be enforced within 50 yds of any turn of 90° or more or whenever it is necessary to reduce speed for safety reasons, for course blockage, for an aid station, or an emergency. This is enforced on the honor system and with using USAT officials.
All bikers must ride along the shoulder whenever possible. There will be several volunteers and police along the course in this area. For your own safety, it is mandated that you ride on the shoulder. The bike course is only partially closed to traffic, so you must be on the lookout for cars (especially those backing out of driveways or parking spots). Again, there will be several volunteers along the course to help with traffic control. You must ride on the right side of the road at all times.
You must ride single file unless passing. Before passing, you must inform the person you intend to pass by yelling, "On your left".
EXCHANGE - Participants will enter with their bikes into the bike corral and return to the same spot to exchange for the run.
All exchanges occur at the Lake Waconia Regional Park near Lake Waconia Event Center. A Bike Corral will be erected. This area is secured.
Only race participants with numbers will be allowed in the bike corral. For security reasons No bike can be brought in or out without the race number on the person and bike matching. The bike corral is a first come - first served space arrangement. Bike racks are set up to be used on both sides; please do not take more than a 3 to 4 foot wide space on one side of the rack.
Note for TEAMS: Team exchange is in the bike corral, in a specially marked area of coral. All team exchanges are done in the bike corral. Each team will have a space for the exchange. Exchanges are at a hand touch system.
RUNNING - Runners will proceed west on Old Beach road traveling to Main street. Turning right on main and proceeding up to the top of “cemetery hill” and then through the City of Waconia via Main Street to Walnut. Runners will turn left (south) on Walnut and go to Third Street. At Third Street they will turn right (west) and proceed for approximately 6 blocks to the turn-around spot. They will return to the beach along the same route. The finish line is in the park on the west side of the bike corral. A structure will be erected to indicate the finish line. Handout.
Safety - Runners must also stay on the right side of the road.
SAFETY PROVISIONS - We are dedicated to provide a safe race for spectators, volunteers and spectators. We have the following plans to assure this:
Off-duty deputies have been hired to assist with crowd and traffic control.
The Lake Waconia Association and the Waconia Fire Department will be assisting during the swimming portion and will provide adequate boats, jet skis and safety for swimmers.
Along the 1/2 mile swim course there will be certified life guards along with the Sheriff Water Patrol and Waconia Fire Department Water Rescue teams.
Each swimmer is required to wear the provided swim cap for easier identification in the water.
Bikers are required to wear a bike helmet during the entire biking portion of the race.
Volunteers will be at each intersection to assist with the flow of traffic and assist the participants.
Two-way radios and cellular phones will be used to provide communication along the race route.
Spotters will be roaming the race course for potential problems during the race.
Medical Services will be provided by Ridgeview Medical Center. An ambulance will be present on a stand-by basis.
Extra porta-potties will be brought in for the race day.
The Lake Waconia Event Center has agreed to allow us to use their parking facilities on race day to handle any overload of the parking lot.
